Music: Dark tunes for darker days

With the winter climate gracing us with gray afternoons and dark evenings, it’s hard to overlook the gloominess of the end of the term. Rain, snow, wind, hail, whatever winter element mother nature may be throwing at you, one thing is for certain, you’ll need an equally dark soundtrack. But what about going out? Well, you need not worry, the darker and deeper side of electronic music is more than ready to get you dancing in gloomy, winter style.

Tiga – Plush

Stream via SoundCloud.

Taken from the latest Tiga mix LP, “Plush” is a dark and brooding anthem that is both sexy and groovy. The track came out on Dec. 18, and you can pick up the Montréal based producer’s mix LP off iTunes now.

Pitchfork said this of Tiga: “He makes niche scenes feel populist.”

Disclosure – Control (feat. Ria Ritchie)

Disclosure, two London-based brothers who have taken the house scene by storm this year, provide quite the fitting addition to any soundtrack for a cold, dark night. “Control” features deep, driving bass lines with playful lyrics courtesy of Ria Ritchie.

XLR8R says this of Disclosure: “The duo’s refashioning of vintage house and garage tropes into bouncy, vocal-driven gems has not only spawned legions of imitators, but is also indicative of how a significant portion of the electronic-music world has turned its attention to the ’90s when mining for inspiration.”

Thriftworks – Die Gracefully (feat. DH the Mythicalifornian)

Thriftworks combines tribal, psychedelic musical progression and melody combined with aggressive yet subtle gangster bass to break free of just about any sort of genre labeling. It’s a transgression in common interpretations of electronic music. It’s refreshing.

Gladkill – Distance

Coming off of a nationwide tour in support of Bassnectar, Gladkill is making waves. His latest release, “Distance” is a deep, future bass banger that will shake your home from floor to ceiling (or it’ll rattle your brain around).

John Talabot – Destiny (feat. Pional)

John Talabot, the Barcelona-based producer, toured in support of The xx this past year, and his productions are exceptional. The tracks are simple yet effective with an overwhelming atmosphere of dance rhythm.
